ABSTRACT

My daughter's birth was beautiful. She was born at home, on the same bed where she was conceived, to the sounds of Fela and my screams of pain. We had chosen her name as soon as we found out she was a girl: Ifétayo, a Yoruba name that means “Love brings joy.” Nothing could better describe how we felt about our blessing. Ifé came out with her fist up and didn't make a sound. No tears, just hunger and a need for sleep after her long journey.
