ABSTRACT

The study of the social unconscious, which is central to the core theory of Foulkesian Group Analysis, has shifted from the “collective mind” to the “tripartite matrix”, which involves three realms or sub-matrices of any social system: the foundation matrix of the contextual society, the dynamic matrices of the group and its main sponsoring organisation, and the personal or interpersonal matrices of the participants. Species and organismic sub-matrices are also indicated. The sub-matrices are characterised in terms of the dimensions of interpersonal relations, values and norms, beliefs, communication, technology, etc. Basic assumptions can also be considered in terms of the tripartite matrix with respect to the collective unconscious and the social unconscious. Two clinical examples of working within the tripartite matrix are presented.
