ABSTRACT

Dr Goldfield in this chapter introduces the themes that the book covers. Epidemics have been present throughout history. The poor bear the brunt of the suffering during epidemics. In addition, we seem to learn little from our past experiences. This chapter highlights the importance of socioeconomic disparities in health. At the same time, many segments of the American political establishment, especially on the Republican side of the aisle, do not agree with this premise. Will the COVID-19 pandemic be different, and will politicians act on the policy implications of socioeconomic disparities in health? Health professionals can make a significant difference in these debates. A population health perspective that places community health workers at the center of a reconfigured health system is one avenue that health professionals and politicians should pursue. Health professionals need to use every tool at their disposal to make the impact that is necessary at this challenging time.
