ABSTRACT
This chapter is devoted essentially to the analysis of artisanship in the arid zone of the Old World. It is, in fact, only there that the complex ways of life (the contrast between pastoral nomads and sedentary workers) and the raised technical level have combined to permit different types of development of craftsmanship to appear, and thus to necessitate an explanation.
