ABSTRACT

In recent decades, nurses in a growing list of countries have faced a highly significant ethical question, namely, “is it professionally acceptable or ethical for nurses and doctors to be involved in acts of euthanasia or medically assisted dying?” This chapter commences with a short vignette that should help to explain the reason why nurses might find euthanasia to be of such great philosophical and professional concern. It then explores the main philosophical and ethical aspects of the above question, and to an extent, the main professional aspects as well, thereby facilitating a greater understanding of the numerous complexities that are associated with this controversial topic.
