ABSTRACT

Analyses of population growth require periodic and systematic information on population totals and the regular collection of birth and death records, together with data on migratory movements. The early years of the twentieth century brought little expansion in the total African population of Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda. With the exploration and development of the territories and the expansion of railway facilities opportunities for the prevention of famine existed. The war years of 1939 to 1945 brought with them the use of East Africa as a base and the education of the African soldier in the use of medical facilities and drugs. In Zanzibar the census of 1948 was repeated in 1958, but in the 1958 census the racial analysis was made more difficult due to the fact that some of the population did not describe themselves as requested on the form.
