ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of an international workshop and conference structure that succeeded in reimagining and realizing multiple border-crossings in doctoral education. This model of an academic gathering traversed generations, disciplines, and countries intending to arrive at a future of a high-quality doctoral education that is focused on societal needs and social justice. Describing the goals and structure of two such events funded by a VW Foundation grant illustrates in detail how the organizers succeed in collectively (180 participants) creating and agreeing on the Hannover 2019 Policy Recommendations geared to improve doctoral education worldwide, to enhance the development of the researchers of the future around the globe, and to develop a more inclusive and respectful research environment.
