ABSTRACT

A critical yet underserved stakeholder group in the academy is mid-level academic leaders (e.g., department chairs, directors, deans, and unit heads) who serve in essential leadership and managerial roles yet are provided little if any support to execute the myriad responsibilities that they are expected to perform. One key responsibility is mentoring and supporting the career advancement of departmental faculty colleagues. The aim of this chapter is to introduce two tools – the Environmental Scan and the Developmental Network Analysis – to enable department chairs and other mid-level academic leaders to be more effective mentors of mid-career faculty colleagues.
