ABSTRACT

This chapter narrowed its lens towards Operations Dudula and Fiela to understand the circumstances behind the new attacks on African migrants in South Africa as discussed on social media platforms. A qualitative methodology was utilized in unpacking the perceptions of African immigrants regarding the operation, and the study used semi-structured interviews with 20 participants residing and working in East London to gather data concerning the phenomenon under study. Data analysis was done using the thematic analysis technique. Findings underscored the following aspects as indicative of the circumstances underlying Operations Dudula and Fiela, as well as the encounters of African immigrants as they go about searching for a better life: increased anxiety and fear, loss of livelihoods and exploitation, a new form of xenophobia, unemployment challenges, political motive, cyberbullying, criminalized, and physical assault. The following strategies have been put forward to enhance the impact of black-on-black hatred: strengthen the enforcement of immigration laws, promote collaboration across Africa, and regulate social media podiums such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to curb the spread of hatred and violence-inciting posts, institute Indabas to educate communities about inclusivity and intensifying surveillance. The chapter concludes by urging African leaders to institute sound regional collaborations and ensure individuals and groups do not incite violence through blame-shifting speeches.
