ABSTRACT

There is a wide range of healthcare needs, and it is a challenge to achieve sustainable goals and provide achievable, approachable, and affordable healthcare to various socio-economic strata in India. With rural penetration of information technology (IT), along with healthcare activities and programmes run by the government over a span of 75 years, people even in far-flung areas of India have become aware of new modalities and the availability of upgraded healthcare resources. Over a period of time, India is emerging as an important medical tourism hub. With this development, there is a demand for healthcare services that are at par with international quality standards, as it is one of the upcoming revenue generation areas. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the strengths and leadership roles of India in a global forum as India was able to manage the pandemic in a much better way than many of the developed countries. India played a pivotal role in vaccine production and even supplied indigenously made vaccines to other countries of the world. With the growing demand for medicines and the rising costs of healthcare, it has become necessary to provide affordable and feasible healthcare to all. Various healthcare schemes and insurance policies have been implemented in India so as to provide basic as well as top-notch healthcare facilities to its citizens. This chapter focuses on key challenges and possible solutions to the various challenges faced by the healthcare system in India.
