ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the UK public health training scheme for those who wish to become accredited specialists in public health practice and eligible to apply for consultant-level public heath posts. It covers how to apply, what to expect from the training and its various stages, including examinations, and includes a personal perspective from the authors. A Specialty Registrar (StR) in Public Health is someone participating in the national training programme to develop Public Health Consultants. In the UK, the body that oversees training and professional standards is the Faculty of Public Health (FPH). Public health StRs come from a variety of medical and non-medical backgrounds, but, once in training, there is no distinction between the two groups in terms of training curriculum, opportunities and assessment. Public Health StRs are a core part of the public health workforce, often carrying out essential projects that other public health staff do not have capacity to do.
