ABSTRACT

An evaluation of the performance of the agriculture sector in Karnataka has been carried out against the back drop of the current agricultural policy framework for all the major crops grown in the state. The previous agricultural policies, viz. 1995 and 2006, of the state have been presented. While the long-term trends in production may have been impressive, in recent years the growth has left much to be desired. Barring rice, ragi, and cotton where the growth has been significant, the other major crops displayed a drastic reduction ranging from –1.5% to as high as –23%. The current agricultural policies had a positive impact on the competitiveness of sunflower, groundnut, rice, and maize but a negative impact on sugarcane, tur, and jowar.
