ABSTRACT

The state is in the aspirant category with regard to five goals as per SDG India Index 2019–20, namely, SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The remaining 11 SDGs (except 17) are in the front-runner category. Out of the 29 indicators listed in the 5 aspirant SDGs, 13 indicators have shown lower values than national figures and 16 indicators are in the aspirant category (0–49). It is important to note that in the recent SDG India Index 2020–21, the state has no goals in the aspirant category. However, this chapter mainly focusses on the aspirant goals of Karnataka identified in the SDG India Index 2019–20 and strategies and action plans to improve their performance.

Karnataka's approach mainly consists of efforts such as the integration of all programmes and policies with measurable SDG indicators, ensuring investments across all sectors through scheme mapping, creating awareness (IEC) using single window agency, promoting skill development through vertical and horizontal coordination, data collection and analytics using spatiotemporal analysis (GIS), higher investments in transport connectivity, and the creation of development zones.
