ABSTRACT

Secondary agriculture is visualised as a driver that complements the primary agriculture sector and has gained prominence with the agenda to double farmers’ income. The tenets of secondary agriculture lie in value addition and creation. Secondary agriculture provides value addition to many sectors of primary agriculture including crops, animal husbandry, fisheries, and poultry by creating facilities for primary processing and management. The value creation strategy relies on products or services that are unique or different from the mainstream array of products. They commonly include a real or perceived quality attribute such as organic certification, brand image, geographic region identification, identity preservation, and environmental stewardship among others. This chapter has analysed developments made from conceptualising to avenues for the integration and convergence of stakeholders across institutions and schemes to operationalise secondary agriculture for greater income generation in the rural sector. Given the changing contours of Indian agriculture, it is imperative that the targeted initiatives will boost the rural economy through secondary agriculture aligning with the wider Sustainable Development Goals.
