ABSTRACT

Supply chain as a concept and a science of techniques assumed importance just over three decades ago. Its application in agriculture is only a little over two decades old, and within these two decades it has impacted and improved agricultural products’ delivery mechanisms across the globe. In this chapter, an attempt is made to review the literature and arrive at a framework relevant to the Indian agriculture sector. Scholars have identified eight crucial elements in the subject of supply chain management, viz., customer relationship management, customer service management, demand management, order fulfilment, manufacturing flow management, product development and commercialisation, and returns management. This chapter has attempted to explain these concepts and tried to identify their relevance and applicability to the growing Indian agriculture sector. With suitable examples and case studies, it was discovered that the supply chain management concepts and techniques have several beneficial applications to the Indian agricultural sector and the Indian agro industry is adopting the supply chain techniques. With technologically enriched youngsters starting businesses to empower the agri sector, the application of SCM techniques augurs well for the Indian agro sector.
