ABSTRACT

The Work that Reconnects (TWTR) is an experiential group methodology that has engaged hundreds of thousands of people worldwide over the last 40 years. It is a rare example of an integrated psychological and philosophical model that addresses distress about our world situation.

This chapter outlines the central spiral framework of TWTR, introducing the reader to the sequence of gratitude practices, honouring our pain for the world, seeing with new and ancient eyes and going forth into committed action. The practical application of this spiral is explored in four different contexts – as a personal practice, in conversations of mutual support, in peer-led groups and in transformative groupwork. Links between concepts and practices of TWTR and their equivalents in psychotherapeutic models are explored and supporting evidence validating practices described.
