ABSTRACT
This introduction outlines the routes and roots of the musical scenes and subcultures explored in the book. Key terms are defined, in particular what is meant by ‘migration’ and ‘subculture’. Relevant literature is acknowledged. The aims and scope of the book are provided to enable the reader to navigate their way across shifting contours of sound and style. By the end, we hope the reader will be well placed to begin their journey, taking account of the varied approaches and myriad ways by which musical forms can communicate and (trans)mutate over time and space.
