ABSTRACT

This chapter critically analyzes the regional gender wage differential of Chinese migrant workers from 2011 to 2017 and calculates the gender discrimination index. The chapter shows that there is a high level of gender wage differences in all regions of China. The gender discrimination index shows that gender discrimination in the northeast and central regions is higher whereas the degree of gender discrimination in the eastern and western regions is low. The chapter analyzes the relationship between the gender discrimination, represented by wage differentials, against female rural migrant workers by examining several relative variables based on the level of regional development. It is further examined by OLS based on China Migrants Dynamic Survey (2011–2017). Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition is used to analyze the overall results, which are grouped by the development level of regions in China.
