ABSTRACT

To address some of the barriers that students with disabilities may encounter, the California State University system issued executive orders, policies, and initiatives promoting and requiring accessible instructional materials. As part of this effort, California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) introduced strategies to mitigate challenges for students with disabilities, regardless of accommodation status. This chapter presents four strategies as before-and-after examples demonstrating CSUSB’s progress toward creating digital accessibility for all. Through the combined work of the instructional design team and the digital content accessibility specialist, efforts to ensure accessible online course environments at CSUSB have evolved from an ad hoc approach to an intentional practice. Strategies such as faculty training, video captioning, course reviews, learning tools, and accessible course templates have been developed over time. To become intentional about the growing request for captions, a form was created that automatically populated the project management software, preventing the need for manual data input and prolonged email exchanges.
