ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an account of the team's experience piloting the Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT), the two rollouts of which marked an initial step in creating a culture of digital accessibility. Developmental institutions are characterized by a strong focus on teaching, collaboration, and facilitation. Institutions can exhibit qualities of all three types of institutional cultures, a tendency that makes this framework useful for conceptualizing change strategies. To be successful, accessibility initiatives should be situated within the culture of an institution. Case studies featuring Michigan State University and the University of Washington describe two different approaches to fostering a culture of digital accessibility. The UDOIT pilot took place within a developmental institutional culture, identified as such based on its strong collegial relationships, emphasis on teaching, and faculty-led initiatives. The pilot itself was developed by staff of the digital learning and design team, which is part of the Teaching and Learning Center housed within the Office of the Provost.
