ABSTRACT

This chapter presents technology tools that faculty and staff can use to author and assess instructional content for accessibility. There are many free tools and paid services available that integrate with learning management systems. These tools include color contrast analyzers, captioning applications, and accessibility checkers, such as those built into Microsoft Office applications, including Word and PowerPoint, as well as Blackboard Ally. Colour Contrast Analyser (CCA) by TPGi is a free application to assess color contrast. To determine color contrast, CCA uses an eyedropper feature that allows users to sample colors on their computer screen. The tool analyzes the contrast between the foreground text, or user interface elements, and the background color of the page to meet sufficient contrast required by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Another color blindness tool is the Coblis Color Blindness Simulator. It is a browser-based simulator that does not involve uploading an image file to a server.
