ABSTRACT

The Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility course was developed and facilitated by two instructional designers from Kapi‘olani Community College to help the University of Hawai‘i employees develop a working knowledge of fundamental digital accessibility concepts and apply practical skills in making digital content accessible. The structure of the course includes a welcome page, an overview, seven construct-specific modules, learning resources, and an optional competency assessment serving credential-driven individuals. The online professional development course was developed based on the learner-focused 5E model of instruction. The approach is constructivist in nature and aims to make learning more personally relevant and applicable to the participants through five phases: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. The course provided participants with a thorough understanding of fundamental digital accessibility concepts, corresponding principles, best practices, tools for evaluating accessibility, and requisite practical skills. Facilitators reached out to participants who fell narrowly short of the 85% minimum and encouraged them to make an additional attempt to earn a credential.
