ABSTRACT

Professional development plays a crucial role in providing instructors and staff with knowledge and skills for digital accessibility initiatives. This chapter describes Indian River State College's (IRSC’s) digital accessibility initiative by detailing a professional development program, including results and recommendations. The IRSC Online Accessibility Initiative began in 2018 with the formation of the accessibility team to design and develop training. The IRSC Online Accessibility Initiative produced professional development opportunities that shifted the focus from accommodations to proactive accessible course design. In addition to the professional development opportunities offered through the IRSC Online Accessibility Initiative, the institution is in the process of developing an internal accessibility course. The training course will encourage faculty and staff to update course or institutional documents to expedite the completion of immediately usable, tangible products. In response to new demands brought by the revised legislation and the COVID-19 pandemic context, the IRSC Online Accessibility Initiative has yielded multiple results.
