ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the case of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), the nation’s first state-supported liberal arts college for African American students, offering an extensive portfolio of in-person and online degree programs for a diverse body of 7,953 students as of fall 2021. Online learning at NCCU aligns with the university’s mission of meeting the educational needs of a diverse student body and the strategic goal of enhancing the intellectual climate by expanding productivity in the areas of teaching, learning, research, and service. To address the immediate need to ensure accessible online courses for all students, the Office of e-Learning played a vital role in the development of the NCCU Accessibility Policy for Course Design. A principal member of NCCU’s accessibility network is the Office of Student Accessibility Services, which works collaboratively with every division and campus unit to ensure access and opportunity for NCCU students with learning differences, documented disabilities, and/or medical conditions engaged in all instructional modalities.
