ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on Spanish mutual benefit societies in the period in question. In order to do so, it gives a quick summary of the studies on this sort of society in Spain over the last three decades, highlighting significant moments and work that have served to advance knowledge of the subject. It then addresses the evolution of approaches and contributions to some of the major topics on the subject, with particular mention of achievements and shortcomings, and some considerations on the current state of knowledge and possible avenues for future research. In this way, it establishes the peculiar features of Spanish mutuality. The study closes with the general bibliography alluded to and/or analysed.
