ABSTRACT

Globalization, digitalization, and other megatrends are constantly and rapidly transforming the way the authors work. Job insecurity can be viewed as uni-dimensional or multidimensional. Uni-dimensional conceptualizations focus on global job insecurity, while multidimensional conceptualizations differentiate between quantitative and qualitative job insecurity as well as between cognitive and affective job insecurity. Job insecurity has been shown to be associated with many negative outcomes in several meta-analyses. As job insecurity is commonly conceptualized as a stressor, stress theories have been utilized to understand why job insecurity is associated with detrimental outcomes. Personal resources may enable employees to counteract the thwarting effects of job insecurity. Many studies have explored various personal resources moderating the relationships between job insecurity and outcomes. Employability is someone’s perception that they are able to get alternate employment should they need to. Employability may serve as a resource, influencing the appraisal process by helping employees feel they can handle the possible threat against their job.
