ABSTRACT

The essay discusses how culture is not a trans-historic element that is beyond social and political phenomenon, but derives its meaning from the limits of time and space. There can be several cultures in history vying for a place in one region. Varying cultures can co-exist in the initial stages of development. The development of Punjabi culture coincides with that of the Punjabi language, that is, the period between the 9th and 12th centuries. This was the period of important transition in its socio-economic life. One of these changes was the identification of the population of Punjab with its geographical unity rather than a person, a family, a clan or a socio-economic organisation.
