ABSTRACT

In spite of opposing the key symbols of Islam, the Sufi poets were still Muslims. They opposed the orthodoxy of these institutions. This opposition paves way for development of that idea. Sufi faith emerged as a response to Islam based on Sharia; it only established the heritage of Islam instead of eliminating it. In India, Sufi faith is complementary to Islam and not contradictory to it. However, the writings of Sufi poets Farid, Bulle Shah and Shah Hussain are distinctive in several features. The essay discusses the characteristic features of these Sufi poets.
