ABSTRACT
The essay traces the growth and development of Punjabi literature in the modern period. New Punjabi literature is an outcome of the intellectual environment created by the First World War. From a literary point of view, Punjabi prose became refined. For the first time ever, clear and refined prose was written during these days. Poetry has proved to be very close to the temperament of Punjabis. Punjabi poetry is no less than any literature of our country’s new languages, in quantity as well as quality.
