ABSTRACT

One of the earliest examples of a linguistic study of the evolution of Punjabi language, the essay by Pyara Singh Padam deals with how Vedic Sanskrit may have contributed to the evolution of Punjabi as we see it today. And, when Sanskrit, Pali and literary Prakrit were done playing their parts on the Indian linguistic stage, Apbhransha appeared on the stage in the 6th century. Apbhransha is the mother of present dialects of North India including Punjabi.
