ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a historical introduction to public diplomacy in Granada, the Hafsid state and the Banu Marin by discussing the role of consuls in strengthening the relationship with civilians, including merchants and business owners. To what extent did the consuls contribute to the development of the diplomatic relationship to achieve the protection of the interests and welfare of citizens? The importance of this chapter lies in its scientific presentation of the development of public diplomacy and its relationship with civil society from a historical perspective. This relationship will be studied through the documents exchanged between the different parties as their diplomatic relations changed according to their interests. The diplomatic records are represented by the written messages carried by the ambassadors and the treaties agreed between the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Granada and North African states, followed by the matter's evolution into the appointment of consuls. Therefore, the chapter is based on the author's deep readings and analysis of the Aragonese archives to obtain knowledge and information about the diplomatic relations carried out by the consuls who took care of the community of citizens at that time.
