ABSTRACT

This chapter describes strategic planning, discusses the multiple purposes for which it is appropriate, and focuses specifically on the implementation and use of strategic planning as a tool for leaders in higher education. While strategic planning approaches used in higher education may vary in some respects, most include as a central component the need to develop, clarify, and promote a shared understanding of mission, vision, and values of an institution and within each of its academic, administrative, student affairs, or service units. Thoughtful mission, vision, and value statements are a reminder to members of the organization and other stakeholders of the organization’s core purposes, aspirations, and fundamental principles. Leaders and colleagues within colleges and universities can similarly benefit from clarifying their key stakeholder groups and identifying their current and future needs and expectations related to potential priorities. Knowing and leveraging the competencies of those who will design and guide the overall leadership process is fundamental.
