ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on planned organizational change within higher education. Understanding resistance is critical for understanding the change failure rates and the many difficulties associated with leading change. The process of accepting or rejecting proposed changes of new proposals, ideas, technology, or behaviors is complex, and as many authors have suggested, when change initiatives are successful, they tend occur through a series of stages. Connection occurs as individuals begin to give serious consideration to specific change initiatives, develop personalized ways of thinking about the prospect of a change, and engage in discussions with others about these possibilities. Managing organizational change is an area of increasing importance for academic as well as administrative leaders. The five-by-five matrix provides a systematic approach that takes account of the stages in the change process in general, plans for a particular change initiative, and identifies the five factors that help to ensure successful outcomes.
