ABSTRACT

The goal of the Environmental Studies Program is to provide a unique educational experience for students that directly links theory to practice, connects the campus to the local community, and immerses students in the surrounding environment. In papers written early in the course, students identify environmental issues on campus that concern them. The central core of the Environmental Studies program is the environmental design studio, which provides students with a series of hands-on courses to explore methods of environmental problem solving. The Environmental Justice course, team taught by the directors of Redlands’s Environmental Studies and Race and Ethnic Studies programs, provides another opportunity for students to become involved directly in real issues. Students may fulfill the Environmental Studies program’s internship requirement either by participating in the university’s Community Service Learning (CSL) course or through other environmental internships during the school year or summer. There is little about project-related courses that resembles traditionally structured courses.
