ABSTRACT

While a number of academic departments at St. Lawrence University have a history of offering credit-bearing internships, there was no university service-learning program until the fall of 1995. Most of them, of course, leave the workshops with an enhanced understanding and appreciation of service-learning and a willingness to recommend the course to students and to colleagues. In Spring 1996, the authors began planning a second section of ND200, one designed specifically for environmental placements. A chronic problem in service-learning is how to grade students when so much of their performance is not directly observed by the campus instructor. Deer hunting and the management of deer are important to the lives of many individuals in the North Country, as was clearly represented by the interests and participation of the students. Students have consistently rated service-learning courses higher than the university average for upper-division courses.
