ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the nature of Problems in Environmental Science course, to discuss the problems and pitfalls faced in its evolution as a service-learning experience, and to present some of the solutions the people have found to those problems and pitfalls. The goals for Problems in Environmental Science evolved along with the course as the people gained a better understanding of what could be accomplished by the students within the framework of a semester, as they developed more efficient and accurate methodologies, and as they discovered new possibilities in interacting with state and local agencies and offices. Several years ago, community leaders and local residents began to make requests of the reader to undertake projects of local interest. The Alliance for Service-Learning in Education Reform has produced a list of “standards of quality” in service-learning.
