ABSTRACT

Adjunct faculty development is important because research focusing on adjunct faculty and their teaching practices have demonstrated a number of undesirable outcomes. Colleges and universities bring into focus the idea of providing classroom support and cultivating improved teaching practices for their adjunct faculty through professional development opportunities. New adjunct faculty are required to attend a session with the program’s director to learn about the university’s policies and procedures related to their employment. The program’s intent is to educate the adjunct faculty in evidenced-based teaching practices as a means of improving teaching and learning in the classroom. Monthly workshops and brown-bag lunches are offered using such thematic topics as use of high-impact practices and classroom engagement techniques. The success of the Adjunct Faculty Learning Community is due in large part to the dedication of the faculty members and the support they give to one another.
