ABSTRACT

In September 2014, six adjunct faculty instructors at GateWay Community College received unexpected phone calls, all inviting them to participate in the inaugural “Excellence in Teaching” Adjunct Faculty Academy (AFA). This chapter begins with the foundations of the AFA, describing its origins, its funding sources, and how participants were nominated by campus leaders to participate. It outlines the learning objectives and lessons taught in the session, and explains how he or she put those lessons to use immediately in the classroom. Although the AFA focused primarily on pedagogical skills, the most noteworthy result was that each participant felt increased empowerment and took on greater leadership within the community after attending.
