ABSTRACT

Freeway faculty have a unique opportunity to engage with multiple learners in a variety of academic settings, and professional development opportunities can make them not only superior instructors who respond to our changing society and its students but also be the “exit” they need to pursue other career possibilities. In today’s world, and in the foreseeable future, teachers will need to engage in high-quality professional development if they are to keep pace with and respond to changes in society and, at the same time, retain their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to high-quality teaching. Because freeway faculty engage with multiple learners in a variety of academic settings and institutions, they may have access to more professional development opportunities than they realize. Adjunct instruction is the only choice in some academic regions, even though some choose it deliberately. Successful adjuncts are those willing to try new things, to learn new techniques, to hone new skills, and to take risks.
