ABSTRACT

Feelings of isolation and a sense of disconnection are all-too-common experiences for adjunct faculty. Adjunct faculty often must balance schedules that include a full-time position outside of teaching or may include multiple courses taught at one or more institutions. This chapter discusses how the community was developed and continues to improve the practice as instructors and scholars. It shares several recommendations for finding and creating communities of adjunct faculty. Professional development is important in an era where individuals have multiple careers instead of progressive positions. For adjuncts who share similar backgrounds or goals, a community of practice (CoP) can provide great support. Essentially, a CoP is an excellent model from which a community of adjuncts can be built.
