ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a continuum of discussion to debate the purpose, utility, and value of higher education administration doctoral degree preparation program guidelines. It examines whether guidelines for higher education administration programs are needed, although earlier writers have explored related issues. The book addresses the historical, current, and future roles of standards in professional practice related to student affairs administration or student services, specifically in the standards by Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and American College Personnel Association. It focuses on creating master’s degree guidelines for higher education administration programs through the work of Council for the Advancement of Higher Education Programs (CAHEP). The book reviews the development and effectiveness of CAHEP’s 2010 master’s degree guidelines for higher education administration programs.
