ABSTRACT

Because the context for postsecondary institutions is dramatically changing, the need for quality graduate programs in higher education that prepare administrators, leaders, policy analysts, researchers, and faculty is greater than ever. Institution leaders should avoid forcing interdisciplinary efforts in a manner that fosters faculty members’ fear of potential loss of program identity or even program termination. University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) is engaged in institution-wide review of its curricula with a goal of fostering collaboration across programs rather than eliminating programs. UWM’s urban mission highlights social justice, equity, and diversity as core values. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in related programs may also be beneficial to current and prospective faculty. Individual higher education scholars may find faculty positions if they are able to demonstrate that they can teach foundational courses that span several related programs, such as History of Education, Philosophy of Education, or Research Design.
