ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes several later and broader efforts during the past 20 years and analyzes the preliminary 2012 data from the survey of programs in the United States and Canada conducted by the Council for the Advancement of Higher Education Programs (CAHEP) of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. It also summarizes the questionnaires of these programs from the past 20 years: the Townsend and Nelson study of the condition of 76 higher education doctoral programs in the United States and Canada, the Goodchild and Card combined CAHEP study of 42 higher education doctoral programs in the United States and Canada, and the Harris study of 169 higher education programs in the United States. These discussions specifically address: the types of programs; the programs’ missions and specializations; core and advanced courses; faculty demographics; student demographic, race, and gender data; and the programs’ governance patterns.
