ABSTRACT

Beginning in 2007 and continuing through to 2009, the Council for the Advancement of Higher Education Programs (CAHEP) of the Association for the Study of Higher Education designed and finalized guidelines for master’s degrees in higher education administration and leadership programs. Similar to the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education standards for student affairs, the CAHEP guidelines are structured to provide program coordinators and other institutional leaders with a tool for determining program efficacy as well as for identifying areas for potential improvement. Thus, the guidelines offer the potential for some guarantee of quality, consistency, and reliability. In 2007, the members of CAHEP approved the creation of an ad hoc task force to continue foundational work under the previous chair’s (Dianne A. Wright’s) leadership in the creation of a set of guidelines for higher education administration and leadership programs.
