ABSTRACT

Drawing upon the experience of Canadian community colleges with applied baccalaureate programs, this chapter begins with a description of the origins, prevalence, and current state of the applied baccalaureate degree in Canada's community colleges. It is noted that although the regulations that enable community colleges to award baccalaureate degrees restrict their baccalaureate-granting authority to applied baccalaureate degrees, the regulations contain little or nothing in the way of defining what an applied baccalaureate degree is. The chapter also notes some differences in scale and terminology between Canada and the United States regarding the community college baccalaureate. It examines the concept of an applied baccalaureate, describes how the concept has been operationalized in practice, and explores questions about the nature and status of the degree. Following this discussion, the chapter ends with some brief concluding comments.
