ABSTRACT

This chapter provides advice on and experiential examples of how to implement; maintain; and, most important, sustain a learning-centered culture. Visioning is critically important in initializing and establishing a culture of a learning-centered college because it allows for all stakeholders to engage in an organic, iterative, and generative experience that begins to set the cultural foundation, long-term directions, and expected outcomes of the learning-centered college. Critical to the long-term sustainability of a learning-centered culture is the appreciation, expectation, and reward system that values and requires all college units to engage and demonstrate commitment to the learning-centered culture. While many colleges maintain both an academic assessment team and an out-of-class assessment team, the addition of an oversight assessment group that aligns, monitors, and maintains institution-wide assessment activities furthers the collaborative culture. A core value in a learning-centered college, evidence-based decision making, enhances organizational practice and improves levels of student success and learning.
