ABSTRACT

This chapter provides strategies for building shared learning outcomes, reflects on potential structures within the institution that can be utilized to support the various assessment initiatives, identifies strategies for engaging faculty and student services in the assessment initiatives, and determines priorities for assessment. Developing a comprehensive assessment process with input from all stakeholders—faculty, students, staff, and admini strators—is the foundation for building shared learning outcomes. Community and two-year colleges thus need to engage in a self-assessment, and if the importance of quality teaching and learning as demonstrated through assessing student learning is not evident in the mission, vision, and values, this should be seen as an opportunity for the institution to start the conversation and set the tone for building shared learning outcomes. The transparency framework consists of six components of SLO assessment: student learning outcomes, assessment plans, assessment resources, current assessment activities, evidence of student learning, and use of student learning evidence.
