ABSTRACT

Engaging faculty and administrators in ongoing assessment processes at a distance-learning institution can pose unique challenges given that faculty members are geographically dispersed throughout the nation. This chapter describes some strategies to promote a culture of assessment, continuous improvement, and data-based decision making. The integration of data is a key part of the program review process and enables internal and external reviewers to effectively evaluate program dimensions during each phase. Direct and indirect evidence of student achievement, coupled with information about other dimensions of program and institutional effectiveness, is integrated into the review process. As part of participation in the initiative, American Public University System (APUS) has agreed to abide by the Principles of Good Practice for Higher Education Institutions Serving Adults at a Distance. APUS regularly provides the public with evidence of student achievement, the soundness of the operation, and the overall effectiveness of the institution.
