ABSTRACT

In the early days of K–12 online learning, from the mid-1990s to early 2000s, institutions focused on how to start, grow, and sustain online programs. The International Association for K–12 Online Learning (iNACOL) national quality standards were developed based on the experience and knowledge of expert practitioners and researchers in K–12 online learning. Oversight and quality assurance for K–12 online learning is currently conducted by regional accreditation groups, state governments, and districts. iNACOL worked with the Northwest Accreditation Commission, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges to develop iNACOL. A few states have adopted policies to assure quality within their online learning programs. Several universities and nonprofit organizations have contacted iNACOL since the release of the standards seeking permission to create professional development programs for online teachers based on iNACOL. The development of quality assurance in K–12 online learning will be an ongoing effort as the field evolves.
