ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses what the pursuit of the “American Dream” has to do with higher education. It argues that success in academic pursuits is among the most celebrated of all forms of upward mobility. The book reviews the research on first- generation students and their transition from the college-choice process through to degree completion. It illustrates how the intersection of Latinx and first-generation college student identities influences the campus experiences of students. Retention of first-generation college students is an issue for all professionals in higher education. The extra effort and willingness to provide advice, perspective, and reassurance can be instrumental for a student who is on the fence about returning.
